Class 1A Football Week 3 Top Ten Breakdown

Class 1A had just a couple changes but nothing huge.  Florence beat Peyton last week to move into the rankings at #7.  Peyton falls out of the rankings.  We also have a new #1 team as Holyoke beat C.S Christian.  Paonia, Monte Vista, and Highland all hold onto top 10 spots despite losses.  A lot of action taking place this week in Class 1A and should be a great week.

#1 Holyoke (2-0)

Holyoke has opened 2019 with a 2-0 start and have a key victory over a top 5 opponent.  Holyoke opened the year with a win over rival Haxtun 34-0 and last week beat #2 C.S Christian 21-6.  Holyoke with the victory jumped into the #1 spot.  Holyoke this week travels to Nebraska to face Bridgeport.  Bridgeport is 1-1 on the year and should provide a solid test to Holyoke.  Holyoke will have a bye next week.  Surprisingly early on Holyoke has been led by their passing attack with Miles Sprague throwing for 338 yards and 2 TDs.  I am very interested to see how Holyoke continues to improve this season.

#2 C.S Christian (0-1)

C.S Christian opened their 2019 campaign with a tough Top 5 matchup against Holyoke.  C.S Christian fell in that game 21-6 but both these teams proved they are going to be extremely tough this season.  C.S Christian defensively struggled stopping the pass giving up 295 yards passing.  C.S Christian did play well against the run holding Holyoke to just 2.8 yards per carry.  Offensively for C.S Christian they were led by their rushing attack with Peyton Brones rushing for 137 yards.  C.S Christian this week takes on Peyton who lost their home opener.  Peyton lost to Florence 34-0 and offensively struggled to get much going.  Peyton had just 122 yards of total offense.  Peyton did prove they are still going to be tough defensively holding Florence to 259 yards rushing but their defense was on the field a lot due to their offense not getting going.  I am interested to see how C.S Christian does against this run first offense and will be interesting to see if Peyton can get their offense going.

#3 Limon (1-0)

Limon started their title defense with a high scoring 36-27 victory over Lamar.  Limon showed that their offense is still top notch and will be difficult to stop.  Limon offensively was successful thru the air and on the ground.  Limon passing attack was led by Trey Hines who threw for 100 yards and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack had a big day rushing for 294 yards and were led by Kory Tacha (176 yards rushing) and Jeremiah Leeper (107 yards rushing).  Limon defensively did struggle stopping the run giving up 374 yards rushing.  Limon will hope their defense can continue to improve but offensively you have to like what they did in week 2.  Limon this week faces Crowley County.  Crowley County is 1-1 on the year suffering a loss to Rye last week 20-0.  Crowley County struggled offensively to get their rushing attack going and Rye had success running the ball.  Crowley County defensively will have to step up against a good rushing attack.  Limon will look to have success stopping the run and force Crowley County to throw the ball.

#4 Meeker (2-0)

Meeker is off to a 2-0 start this season and picked up a big 40-8 victory over Coal Ridge last week.  Meeker offensively continues to have success and last week were a bit more balanced with the passing attack racking up 202 yards and the rushing attack getting 170 yards.  Meeker passing attack is led by Ryan Phelan who has over 450 yards passing thru two games.  Defensively Meeker did a great job stopping the run holding Coal Ridge to 123 yards rushing or just 3.6 yards per carry.  Meeker has a lot of new players on defense this year so seeing the growth is key for this team.  Meeker this week will hit the road to take on Aspen.  Aspen lost their home opener 37-20 to Bayfield.  This was an upset as Aspen was ranked in the Top 5 in Class 2A.  Aspen will now look to bounce back against a 1A power.  Aspen is a pass first offense, so I am interested to see how Meeker stacks up against this team.

#5 Centauri (1-0)

Centauri opened their 2019 season with a top 10 matchup against Paonia.  Centauri was able to find success in the second half to win 33-0.  Centauri was up just 6-0 at halftime but scored 27 points to push the Falcons to the win.  Centauri was balanced with their offensive attack passing for 136 yards and rushing for 154 yards.  The passing attack was led by Eric Maez and the rushing attack was led by Taj Cornum (50 yards rushing) and Mason Claunch (48 yards rushing).  Centauri defensively did a solid job stopping the run holding Paonia to 180 yards rushing.  Centauri this week will face another double wing attack when they host Pagosa Springs.  Pagosa Springs is off to a 0-2 start but last week showed they are better than their record indicates losing to #1 La Junta (2A) 19-7.  Pagosa Springs defensively will have to stop a spread offense and offensively must be able to run the ball to have success.  Centauri will be tested with their discipline on defense.

#6 Strasburg (2-0)

Strasburg is off to a hot 2-0 start to open the season.  Last week Strasburg beat Burlington 19-6 to move to 2-0.  Strasburg played outstanding defense last week.  Strasburg held Burlington to just 42 yards on 27 carries or 1.6 yards per carry.  Strasburg offensively had a big day running the ball rushing for 305 yards.  Trystan Graf led all rushers with 161 yards.  Strasburg passing attack has also been consistent with Collin Russel throwing for 93 yards.  Strasburg this week faces off against rival Bennett (2A).  Bennett opened their season in a big way blasting Ellicott 54-0 and had running clock by the second quarter.  Bennett had a big day on the ground rushing for 340 yards and the main standout is Mac Copeland who ran for 68 yards on 1 carry.  This is a historical rivalry and it comes down to can Strasburg stop the run and can Bennett slow down Strasburg high powered offense.

#7 Florence (2-0)

Florence is off to a hot 2-0 start and thru two games have scored 74 points and given up just 6.  Florence last week pounced Peyton 34-0 and were led by their rushing attack.  Florence ran for 259 yards as a team and were led by Jacob Kennedy who ran for 149 yards and 3 TDs.  Florence does not have a game this week and will prepare to travel to Monte Vista next week.

#8 Paonia (0-1)

Paonia opened their season on the road down at Centauri.  Paonia came up short losing to Centauri 33-0 but were down just 6-0 at half.  Paonia had some success rushing the ball racking up 180 yards rushing.  Paonia passing attack was ineffective but Paonia has always been know more for their rushing attack.  Defensively Paonia did a good job of stopping the big plays that Centauri usually has.  Paonia this week faces off against #9 Monte Vista.  Paonia defensively will be tasked with stopping the run first offense of Monte Vista.  Paonia offensively must continue to run the ball with success and this will be a great matchup for both teams.

#9 Monte Vista (0-1)

Monte Vista opened their season on the road at rival Alamosa.  Alamosa came away with the 40-14 victory, but the game was closer than the score indicated.  Monte Vista was ahead after the first quarter, but a turnover flipped momentum and Alamosa never looked back.  Monte Vista defensively struggled with the spread offense of Alamosa giving up 228 yards passing and 298 yards rushing.  Offensively Monte Vista found some success early but slowed down.  Kaidon Wenta had a solid day rushing for 136 yards and passing for 86 yards.  Monte Vista will have to make some adjustments defensively to stop a solid Paonia team.

#10 Highland (1-1)

Highland is off to a 1-1 start to the season.  Highland picked up their first loss of the season last week to The Academy (2A).  Highland struggled stopping the pass giving up 248 yards and 3 TDs.  Highland offensively did find some success throwing but couldn’t get the ground game going rushing for just 59 yards.  Highland will have a bye this week and will face Valley next week.  This will be a big game to see if Highland can bounce back.
